Kids’ Dentistry & Prevention

Positive dental experiences that help children build healthy smiles — and confidence — for life

Helping children develop healthy teeth is about much more than preventing cavities. It is about creating positive experiences, building good habits and helping children feel comfortable and confident when visiting the dentist.

With over 30 years of experience as a Dental Hygienist and Therapist, I provide gentle, preventative dental care for children, with an approach that is tailored to their age, personality and individual needs.

My aim is to make dental visits feel relaxed, friendly and positive, while giving children the knowledge and confidence they need to look after their teeth as they grow.

Why is prevention so important?

Children’s teeth can be particularly vulnerable to tooth decay, especially as their diets, routines and oral hygiene habits develop.

Good prevention from an early age can make a real difference.

Regular dental visits allow us to monitor your child’s teeth and gums, identify potential problems early and provide practical advice that can be incorporated into everyday family life.

I also work with parents to help them understand the factors that can influence their child’s oral health, including brushing, fluoride, diet, snacks and drinks.

The goal is to give children the best possible start and help establish healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

What does children’s dental care involve?

Every child is different, so appointments are adapted to suit their age, confidence and individual needs.

From around five years of age, we would usually begin regular dental hygiene appointments, depending on the individual child and their needs. These appointments can help children become familiar with professional dental care while supporting good brushing habits and maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

Children’s appointments may include:

  • Children’s dental examinations
  • Professional dental hygiene and plaque disclosing and removal
  • Monitoring tooth and gum health and development
  • Personalised toothbrushing guidance
  • Advice about diet, snacks and drinks
  • Fluoride treatments where appropriate
  • Fissure sealants where appropriate
  • Prevention and management of early tooth decay
  • Helping children understand how to care for their teeth
  • Advice and support for parents
  • Liaising with other dental professionals where appropriate

The emphasis is always on prevention, education and creating a positive relationship with dental care.

Working together for your child’s dental health

I believe children benefit from a team approach to dental care.

I work closely with a paediatric dentist in Elstree when children require specialist paediatric dental assessment or treatment, ensuring that they receive the appropriate care at the right time.

I also work alongside orthodontists where appropriate, particularly when monitoring a child’s dental development and identifying situations where orthodontic assessment may be beneficial.

This collaborative approach means that, where specialist care is needed, I can work alongside the wider dental team to support your child’s oral health journey.

Making dental visits a positive experience

I believe that a child’s experience at the dentist can influence how they feel about dental care for many years to come.

That’s why I don’t believe in rushing children through an appointment.

I take time to introduce children to the environment, explain things in a way they can understand and allow them to become familiar with the experience at their own pace.

For some children, simply having the opportunity to sit in the dental chair, have a chat and explore what’s involved can be an important first step.

My approach is gentle, encouraging and centred around building trust.

Supporting nervous children

Some children naturally feel more apprehensive about dental visits, particularly if they have had an upsetting experience in the past.

I take the time to listen to their concerns and work with them rather than expecting them to simply “get through” the appointment.

Where appropriate, we can introduce additional comfort options, including noise-cancelling headphones, their choice of music and calming audio, helping to create a more comfortable and personalised experience.

The aim is to help children feel involved, heard and in control wherever possible.
